Travel + Leisure India & South Asia declared the results of its fifth edition of the ‘India’s Best Awards’ at a flamboyant event in Shangri-La, Delhi recently, which saw the conferring of prestigious awards to top destinations, cities, cruises, airlines, etc. Graced by the crème de la crème, the event coincided with the 10th Anniversary celebrations of Travel + Leisure India in the South Asian region. The digital polling was conducted through their website for a period of 5 months beginning from August’2016 this year. The culmination of the polling was ensued by the announcement and the hosting of the Grand Awards Ceremony in Delhi. The chief guest for the event was Dr. Martin Ney, the German Ambassador to India who delivered a keynote speech and presented the awards to the winners. Another prominent personality was Lorenzo Angeloni, the Italian Ambassador to India, who graced the occasion as the ‘Guest of Honour’.
With a total of 49 awards cutting across varied genres ranging from the best country, emerging destination, cruise, business hotel, airport, destination spa to the most exquisite honeymoon destinations in India and across the world, countless of Travel + Leisure India & South Asia’s discerning readers had passionately voted in the closely contested polls. The last two awards for the evening were decided by the travel community Tripoto, for the best Blogger and Amateur photographer.
HP India, one of the partners for the awards, installed a virtual reality golfing game at the venue which thoroughly enthralled the guests. Other partners for the evening were The Wadhwa Group, Associate Partner, Shangri-La’s – Eros Hotel, New Delhi, Hospitality Partner, Ballantine’s, Associate Partner, Tripoto, Travel Community Partner, and Kama Ayurveda, Souvenir Partner.
The evening saw distinguished personalities from the travel and lifestyle industries. Priya Paul, Chairperson of The Apeejay Surendra Park Hotels, tech guru Rajiv Makhni, former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan, classical musician Ustaad Shujaat Khan, Padmashri Kathak Guru Shovana Narayan, spiritual guru Anita Achariaji, Anil Lepps, CEO, India Bulls, Designer Monisha Bajaj, Dhruv Kapur, and Tripoto co-founder Michael Lyngdoh were invited to present the awards.
The Best State Award 2016 had joint winners, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. B Venkatesan (Secretary to Telangana Govt, Department of Tourism, Youth Advancement and Culture0 and Tapan Bhaumik (Chairman, Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation) received the awards. Kerala, famous for its romantic getaways was voted the ‘Best Honeymoon destination’ and the award was received by Balamurali (Additional Director General, Kerala Tourism).
In the category of International Destinations, Travel + Leisure India readers had a tough choice between Israel and Mexico for deciding the Best Cultural Destination. Subsequently, the awards were jointly given to the representatives of the two nations namely Hasan Madah, Director Israel Tourism, and Minister Eduardo Curiel, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Mexico.
The award that stunned this year was the ‘Best Emerging Destination’, shared by Germany and Bulgaria. Romil Theophilus, Director for India, German Tourism and Ilya Dekov, Cultural Councilor, Bulgarian Consulate were presented the awards.
Lufthansa and Emirates bagged the Best Airline (International) with Anju Gupta and Simran Kapoor from Lufthansa and Tarun Sharma from Emirates receiving the awards.
Canada won the contest by bagging the Best Adventure Destination; while Ireland and Italy grabbed the Best Luxury Destination award. Sanjeet, Representative, Destination Canada, Salvatore Ianniello, from the Italian State Tourism Board, and Beena Menon from Tourism Ireland were handed the trophies.

Noteworthy among the other awardees were Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces and The Oberoi Hotels & Resorts who were polled as the ‘Best Hotel Groups’ in India. Germany won the ‘Best Emerging Destination’ Award, while Goa and Puducherry won the ‘Best Wedding Destination’ Award.
Resorts World Sentosa Singapore won the ‘Best Integrated Resort’ Award followed by ‘Best Wedding Destination’ award going to Thailand & Abu Dhabi. ‘Best Food Destination award’ was won by Spain & Japan, while ‘Best Family Destination’ went to Switzerland. The ‘Best Luxury Destination’ award went to Italy & Ireland ensued by the ‘Best Tour Operator’ award being bagged by Abercrombie & Kent India, Cox & Kings India, and the Regent Seven Seas winning the ‘Best Cruise’ award. Besides, Jidhu and Trisha Singh were awarded ‘Best Amateur Travel Photo.
