About the Designer

Shantanu an alumni of NIFT, Kolkata’s inaugural batch, won an award for the most creative designer and also interned with fashion guru JJ Vallaya. Today, this Kolkata based designer has not only launched his own label but has also managed to realize his dreams of creating beautiful clothes.

His forte is Indian trousseau and bridal wear for women. He does some menswear occasionally though only on request. Apart from his couture line, he has also launched his prêt and diffusion lines that have been highly appreciated. “I always wanted to do creative clothing”, he says, “Couture is only a source of sustenance”.  The hallmark of his design philosophy is – not being afraid to experiment.

The Studio
Shantanu operates from his studio of about a 1000 sq. ft. in Kolkata. The studio has been re-launched recently and looks nothing less than a Parisian couture salon. Done up in rich wooden interiors, gold leather couches, Swarovski crystal embedded cushions and red walls with gold hand painted motifs. The entire look marries perfectly with his signature style and reflects Shantanu’s personality.

Over the past few years Shantanu has cultivated a set of both national and international clients. They rely on him for his exquisite craftsmanship, quality and design sensibility and receive his personal attention and suggestions. Shantanu works with them to advise on the colour, the methods of drape and the carriage, the kind of accessories, hair and even make-up tips that compliment the clothes. In a nutshell, he creates for them the complete look.

As a thorough perfectionist, Shantanu looks into every possible detail of his garments and ensures quality finish and flawless workmanship. His passion for perfection at times causes him to discourage clients buying an outfit if he feels it does not suit their personality.

Shantanu thoroughly enjoys his profession; which is also his hobby. He believes that it is quality, job satisfaction and client appreciation, which matters the most. “I prefer
doing things with perfection; either do it with complete dedication or don’t do it at all”.

Design Philosophy

Shantanu’s clothes have a very glamorous feel to them. A lot of pieces from his collections are jewellery inspired and take us back in time; with age old embroideries, colour, fabric, silhouettes and styling. Even his approach towards prêt is very different, as he puts in a lot of meaning into each manufactured piece.  He draws inspiration from anything possible, from jewellery, to history, to people and portrays it in his collection with such élan. He is extremely versatile in his sense of style as he gets bored with a certain look and swiftly adapts. This approach makes him unique among his profession and yet he manages to leave his mark on every creation. Swarovski components, however, are a part of most of his outfits, be it in detailing or delicate trimming. It is because of this that he is the only designer in Kolkata to have signed a quality branding contract with the company.

With his growing interests in expansion and huge acceptance and demand for his creations, he has been receiving offers from innumerable renowned stores both nationally as well as internationally.

Shantanu has been a regular visitor to different fashion institutes in Kolkata. He is always there on the jury panel during design collections and mentoring students from time to time. He even takes up modules on styling and sketching with students and is always ready to help them with their education both mentally and financially.
