Nahid Merchant has always been a keen observer & follower of designing in one form or the other, ever since her childhood days the passion & thirst for art was the premier & only reason to acquire formal knowledge in fine arts. She holds a degree from the J.J school of Arts in the year 1984. Her passion for good clothes override her passion for painting & hence the switch over. She defines designing as an amalgamation of line , form, color & texture. She began her fashion career in 1986 with exhibitions & later shifted her grounds to exports under the label “Insilks” to London, USA, South Africa & Kuwait.there was no looking back at this point of time; she began a never ending journey… Her first collection was launched in 1994 for the hi fashion store ‘Melange’. She now retails from reputed stores like Ensemble- Mumbai & Delhi, Shoppers’s Stop- Mumbai & Delhi, Sosa’s-Goa, Oorja, Elahe, Stanza & Origins- Hydrabad, Saffron- Pune & Melange- Mumbai. She has been associated with several fashion events & shows for the stores she retails from. Design Philosophy: “For me designing is an amalgamation of line, form, color & texture. I create abstract compositions on a two dimensional surface which automatically gets a third dimension when draped on the human form,” says Nahid. Her forte has been experimenting with indo-western silhouettes, the cuts well defined, clean & simple, with a finishing touch of immaculate embellishment. Pure fabrics in pure color are her style. She also creates her own print designs in an unusual color combination. She is known for her fusion lines, which are free flowing & innovatively styled. Also known for her embroidered hi fashion creations, which take inspiration from the glorious past of Indian history. Inculcating the glorious past on stylized silhouettes, in raw silk, linen, organza & noile. The inspiration breathes life into the invaluable stones personifying their majesty & elegance. Some of the collections to her credit have been: “THE PAUL KLEE LINE”, Indo- western line where she used the artists work on garments. “COLORS OF LIFE”, Indo- western line where she used a plethora of colors. “HOMAGE TO ROTHKO”, Indo-western line where she used his impressive way of blending colors on canvas which created an impact of its own.
