Lata Mangeshkar popularly known as the Nightingale of India passes away at 92 years of age.
The legendary singer who had been suffering from Covid-19 and pneumonia has left India grieving, she had been under constant observation and efforts by doctors and was even put on a ventilator at Breach Candy hospital, Mumbai.
Lata Mangeshkar was the daughter of a well-known Marathi musician and theatre artiste Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar, she had her roots from a musical family only.
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first Hindi song called “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi feature Gajaabhaau, which had released in 1943. She then served the Indian music industry and cinema with her sweet mystifying voice. I still remember her famous song “ naam gumjayega, chehra ye badal jayega, meri awaaz hi pehchan hai….. “
The Indian government has announced two days of mourning from Sunday, during which the national flag would be flown at half-mast throughout the country.
She will be given a state funeral. Her cremation would take place in Mumbai on Sunday evening.
President Ram Nath Kovind said the news was “heart-breaking for me, as it is for millions the world over” and added that in her songs “generations found expression of their inner-most emotions”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Mangeshkar’s death left a “void in our nation that cannot be filled”.
