Nandita Basu at WLIFW SS12

Ace designer Nandita Basu showcased eight different garments on the opening day of the WLIFW SS12. Each garment uttered new story of its own. The show kick-started with the model walking in knee-length red shift dress with kantha embroidered bodice and arm rings on jungle inspired sensual background music. The white arm bangles, nose ring and the dhoti inspired cowls hint us that the designer was clearly inspired from Rajasthani tradition while the use of kantha stitch reminds us of her Bengali upbringing.

The kantha stitch work shaped out of red-and-white-thread-work gave an entire new meaning to the dresses in silent and muted colour palette. The forte of the show lies in the judicious use of surfaces combined with pleats and cowls. White panelled top was teamed with pleated shorts while delicate cowls created a beautiful rhythm and movement and were evident in jumpsuits and dhoti-inspired wrap-around skirts in subtle shades of beige, mustard and white. The indo-fusion inspired shift dresses had squarish geometric motifs near the hemline while it transformed into horizontal stripes as the show progressed. A revealing v-neck white dress with dhoti inspired cowls belted at waist put an end to this indo-western prêt collection.
